He stated that his goal was to “uncover the full truth behind this border conflict.” He planned to report back to the American public and the former President.
However, just days later, Thailand reversed its decision. In a statement, Jirayu accused Alfaro of “slanderous and violent language.” He went on to state that Alfaro was “not a real White House correspondent.” Additionally, he asserted that Alfaro erroneously claimed to be connected to Trump. He also stated that the Cambodian government had hired Alfaro as a lobbyist. He concluded that the invitation had been officially withdrawn.
Backlash and Accusations of Hypocrisy
The sudden reversal sparked backlash across social media and among regional commentators. Cambodia’s former Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith condemned the move, accusing Thailand of contradicting its own offer. He remarked that the Thai government “swallowed its own spit.” They initially offered Alfaro unrestricted access. However, they later rejected him under the pretext of misinformation.
Kanharith drew attention to the evolving nature of journalism. He pointed out that modern credibility often stems from public reach. It does not depend on formal titles. “In today’s media, what matters is viewership. A person who gets many views holds more weight. This is true even if they are not a real journalist. They carry more influence than a journalist nobody notices,” he wrote.
Veteran Thai journalist Pravit Rojanaphruk echoed these sentiments. He stated that the Thai government’s handling of the situation made it appear indecisive. It also seemed inconsistent. Alfaro’s Credibility Defended
Amid the controversy, Gary Franchi, Chief White House Correspondent at NextNewsNetwork, came to Alfaro’s defense. In a public post, Franchi clarified that Alfaro was not on Cambodia’s payroll. He had personally funded his travel. This was after One America News withdrew due to safety concerns. Franchi called Alfaro a “Trump consultant.” He said Alfaro was a diplomatic liaison and strategist. He asserted that Alfaro acted independently to bring attention to the suffering at the border.
Alfaro’s international activism predates the current conflict. He was previously credited for aiding in a humanitarian crisis in Laos and providing medical equipment to a local hospital. In 2023, he led a delegation to Israel to study PTSD among military veterans and presented findings at the Knesset. He has also lobbied for various U.S. policies, including better support for Afghan evacuees and more transparency in Vietnam.
Regional Voices Call for Transparency
Cambodian civil society leaders emphasized that Alfaro’s journalistic status should not overshadow the importance of his reporting. Chhan Sokunthea, Executive Director of the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media, argued that the quality of Alfaro’s coverage matters. Its impact is more significant than whether he holds a formal press credential.
“He went to the site. He allowed people all over the world to see what happens at the border,” Sokunthea said. “Anyone can do the same if they have the chance and the platform.”
Sokunthea suggested that allowing Alfaro to report from both sides of the border would help deliver a more balanced narrative. This approach would also make the narrative more transparent. This would facilitate a peaceful resolution.
Kin Phea, Director-General of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, was more direct in his criticism. He stated that by rescinding Alfaro’s invitation, Thailand appeared to be hiding something. “This decision damages Thailand’s credibility and raises questions about what the government doesn’t want the world to see,” he said.
Trump Continues to Monitor the Situation
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who played a role in brokering the ceasefire, has reportedly remained engaged in the situation. Trump spoke aboard Air Force One during an interview with Fox News. He confirmed that Washington is continuing to monitor developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border. He reiterated the need for both countries to uphold the ceasefire and move toward a peaceful resolution.
Alfaro has pledged to report his findings directly to Trump upon completing his investigation. He stated that accurate, on-the-ground information is vital. This information is crucial for shaping a long-term peace strategy between the two Southeast Asian nations.
